Artist Statement
In Macbeth, the lighting objectives were to create pockets of specific location within the broader space, to lend a sense of being untethered or out of reality in internal moments, and to enhance the elements of magic. These constituted the three primary modes of the lighting design.
Generally, the aim was for a feeling of grandeur and directionality - the sun casting through trees, into structures, through windows and openings. The primary source of light in the External mode was ‘natural;’ defined through pseudo-realistic textures and colors implying place, time, weather, etc.
The primary sources in the Internal mode were lower angle, more abstractly textured, and played with silhouette and grotesque modeling. These moments of the internal world sought to feel like losing your vision as they replaced softness with jagged edges.
Lastly, the Mystic mode governed the supernatural; these elements of magic. This was defined by an atmosphere which introduced specific color motifs to transform the space into something other, something wild and untamed.
