Artist Statement

Heathers: The Musical is a layered social satire. This is in DNA of the film it is based-on, pushed further here by the conventions of a musical. A starting point for this production was to consider the world of Heathers through the lens of the horror and thriller genres. This pushed the visual language to lean into a stylized, saturated look; not dissimilar to what already existed in the iconic costuming color scheme.

Locations are psychologically defined through color undertones, texture, and focus such as the green glow of the TV in JD’s living room, the bubblegum mania of ‘Big Fun,’ and the sickly glow of Dead Chandler and her cadre of spirits.
