Artist Statement

Poor Clare is relatively sparing in its design needs. The three primary locales of Clare’s home, Francis’ church, and the public palazzo constitute the balance of the scenes. Each is defined by some leitmotif.

For Clare’s home, there is a richness playing about in gold and amber, for the palazzo it is a noon-sun reveal which is contorted into something foreign to Clare when she returns to the stage and finds this area transformed into the homeless encampment ‘under the bridge.’ Lastly, there is the church, which ultimately becomes defined by candlelight softly dancing about the space until the very end when a god beam of light cradles Clare in her final prayer for goodness.
